#Daily_News_Roundup: Field, Medical and Humanitarian Situation in #Daraya, Damascus
09/10/2013
***Headlines***
Heavy artillery shelling against several areas; clashes on the eastern front while other fronts remain calm; warplane and helicopter overflights; siege continues causing acute shortages in all necessities of life
*** Recent developments on the ground***
The city of Daraya was shelled today by artillery batteries located on Muaddamiya Mountains and tanks based around the city. The shelling which targeted the Old Corniche set fire to a number of homes and destroyed many others. The same area was scene to clashes between FSA and regime fighters.
Regime warplanes and helicopters conducted overflights over the city.
*** Humanitarian situation***
After 10 months of tight siege on the two neighbouring cities of Daraya and Muaddamiya, the need is ever more urgent for essential supplies like food, medicine and even potable water. All power, communications and internet services have also been cut off.
The displaced people from both cities continue to suffer in the western suburbs of Damascus due to continual shelling, security forces harassment, and arrest campaigns launched by regime forces. Inside Damascus, security forces are cracking down on most displaced people especially those who come from Daraya or Muaddamiya.
