20/07/2013
***Headlines***
Fierce clashes around Liberty Square and sniper operations on several fronts; sporadic artillery shelling causes a number of injuries; after 9 months of siege, flour runs out, supplies extremely low
*** Recent developments on the ground***
The city was shelled from tanks located on the city outskirts as well as from Muaddamiya Mountains (where the Fourth Division is based). The shelling targeted several areas including the south-eastern and western areas and the city centre. The shelling caused several injuries and led to more destruction in residential buildings.
The vicinity of Liberty Square was shelled violently by tear gas and heavy artillery. Sniper operations as well as RPG and B10 shelling were also recorded on several fronts.
***Humanitarian situation***
The 9-month long siege has been causing acute shortages in medical and food supplies as well as a complete blackout of electricity, water and communications.
Thousands of civilians including women and children are still trapped inside the city in dire need for the basic life necessities. The city has been without bread for over two months due to the absence of flour.
Hundreds of wounded persons including young children, under 1 year old, are in extreme need for medicine and medical care. Field hospitals are simply not capable to meet all these needs amid these tragic circumstances.
