08/07/2013
***Headlines***
Cautious calm on most fronts interrupted by mutual sniper operations; helicopter raids and intermittent artillery shelling causes a number of injuries; 8-month-long siege causes widespread destruction and dire shortages in all supplies
*** Recent developments on the ground***
Most fronts witnessed cautious calm during the day interrupted only by mutual sniper operations and light weapon skirmishes on the outskirts of the city.
As usual, a military convoy from Al-Mazzeh Airport headed towards the city via the Southern Circle Road with tanks, vehicles and troops with the aim of reinforcing regime locations with personnel and supplies. Meanwhile, regime helicopters flew over the city.
The regime resumed its systematic shelling against the city’s neighbourhoods using heavy artillery and mortar bombs. The shelling came from barracks and checkpoints which surround the city and suffocate it by banning all forms of supplies.
The systematic shelling, though sporadic nowadays, caused massive damage to buildings. Two people were also lightly injured and were treated at the field hospital.
***Humanitarian situation***
The humanitarian situation is beyond belief. The twin cities of Daraya and Muaddamiya have been under tight siege for more than 8 months. The remaining inhabitants are suffering acute shortages in food and medical supplies amid a total black out of electricity, water and communications.
The suffering of the displaced Darayans is increasing on a daily basis, especially those in neighbouring towns. More than 200,000 displaced people face unimaginable difficulties under siege and shelling.
