#Daily_News_Roundup: Field, Medical and Humanitarian Situation in #Daraya, Damascus
05/07/2013
***Headlines***
Huge demonstration despite the siege; fierce clashes; intermittent artillery shelling; two deaths and a number of injuries; 8-month-long siege causes dire shortages in all supplies
*** Recent developments on the ground***
Fierce fighting has been going on in the vicinity of Liberty Square between the FSA and regime forces as the latter attempted to advance through this front. The FSA’s attempts to repel these attacks resulted in several deaths and casualties among regime forces. The fighting was accompanied by violent shelling from heavy artillery and tanks causing two deaths and several injuries.
This morning a #military_convoy headed towards Daraya’s eastern entrance from Al-Mazzeh Airport with 5 tanks, 3 BMP vehicles, 4 armoured vehicles, a number of DShK-mounted trucks, and troop carriers. The same reinforcement forces were seen leaving the city in the evening.
***Humanitarian situation***
The humanitarian situation is beyond belief. The twin cities of Daraya and Muaddamiya have been under tight siege for more than 8 months. The remaining inhabitants are suffering acute shortages in food and medical supplies amid a total black out of electricity, water and communications.
The suffering of the displaced Darayans is increasing on a daily basis, especially those in neighbouring towns. More than 200,000 displaced people face unimaginable difficulties under siege and shelling.
The remaining people of Daraya staged a demonstration in which they saluted the FSA battalions active in Daraya and chanted in support of the besieged and afflicted cities.
***Today’s fallen heroes***
Today, two of Daraya’s bravest young men were killed while defending their land and honour.
