*** Recent developments on the ground***
The military campaign against the city of Daraya has continued into an
8th month. Assad’s militias have been trying to seize control of the
city by dispatching daily reinforcements from AL-Mazzeh Military
Airport.
Intermittent clashes broke out along several fronts. The
regime has been trying to seize control of the city for almost 8 months.
In the early hours of the morning, Assad’s forces tried to sneak via
the western front but the FSA stopped them in their tracks killing and
injuring several of them. As a result, the advancing troops were forced
to retreat. Tanks based along Jedaidah-Sahnaya road also fired shells at
the western front.
Clashes also broke out in several areas
especially around the alleged ‘Sukaina Shrine’, and Alkholani Mosque
which are being targeted by regime and Hezbollah fighters. Sniper
operations continued around liberty square, and along Al-maamil Road and
the Old Corniche.
Meanwhile, most areas were targeted by
intermittent artillery shelling causing more destruction in buildings
and civilian homes.
Smoke was seen billowing from Daraya Arch area. It is believed to be caused by the regime’s demolishing of homes.
Helicopters were seen flying over the city.
*** Humanitarian situation***
Daraya has been living for over eight months under tight siege stopping
all necessities from reaching the city. Most food and medical supplies
are running out while electricity, communications, and fuel are also
completely cut off from the city.
The suffering of the
displaced Darayans is increasing on a daily basis, especially those in
neighbouring towns. More than 200,000 displaced people face unimaginable
difficulties under siege and shelling.
