Daily News Roundup: Field, Medical and Humanitarian Situation in Daraya, Damascus
20 April 2013
***Headlines***
New attempts to seize control of the city; violent clashes on several fronts; FSA clears several locations; extremely violent shelling using rocket launchers and heavy artillery; 10 martyrs and 19 injuries; widespread destruction in residential neighbourhoods; suffocating siege causes dire need in all necessities of life
*** Recent developments on the ground***
Despite escalating shelling from all barracks surrounding the city, and despite increasing clashes on all fronts especially the southern front, Four Seasons Complex, and Shayyah Road, FSA fighters have been able to repel regime’s forces and their reinforcements which were in excess of 30 tanks and vehicles. The FSA has reclaimed all locations occupied by regime forces during the past two days in addition to killing and injuring dozens of them after extremely violent battles during which rocket and artillery shelling never stopped.
A military convoy headed towards the city coming from Al-Mazzeh Airport via the Southern Circular Road. The convoy consisted of 4 tanks, 3 BMP vehicles, 3 armoured-vehicles, 8 DShK vehicles, a number of ambulances, as well as a large number of personnel carriers (cars and buses). The front extending between the Old Corniche and Sukaina Shrine, witnessed clashes in an attempt to control the city by storming via several points.
Reinforcements continued to pour on the city throughout the day and they retreated by sunset. The withdrawal was covered by increasingly violent shelling which still persists up to the moment.
A number of people died today, some of whom were killed by shelling while the others died outside Daraya. The total number of fallen heroes today reached 10, including 4 inside the city and 6 in neighbouring towns.

*** Humanitarian situation***
We would like to draw attention to the suffering of the displaced Darayans especially nowadays during the shelling of the city of Jedaidat Artouz, Fadl Street where a large number of them live where two people have been executed while 3 others were killed by shelling.
More than 6,000 displaced families live in these areas and face unimaginable difficulties under siege and shelling. People remaining inside Daraya are facing a far greater threat under siege and total absence of the basic necessities of life.
*** Medical Centre Report***
The medical team continues to provide all possible help to rescue and treat injured victims whether civilians or FSA fighters despite the extreme shortage in medical staff, equipment and material.
The field hospital received today 19 injured victims including children. The victims were rescued and given the necessary treatment and medication.
