Daily News Roundup: Field, Medical and Humanitarian Situation in Daraya, Damascus
01 Feb 2013
Headlines: Clashes along several fronts and the FSA hold on to their positions for the 76th day; shelling using rocket, artillery and tank fire causes several injuries and massive destruction in residential neighbourhoods; horrible medical and humanitarian situation
*** Recent developments
This morning, new military reinforcements headed towards the city including tanks, vehicles and troop carrying coaches. The convoy was preceded with artillery and rocket attacks causing a number of injuries.
Intermittent clashes broke out along several fronts including the Main Road connecting Abu Salah Square and Liberty Square, Municipality street, and Aljamiaat area.
Shelling using heavy artillery and tank fire targeted residential neighbourhoods in the western and southern areas as well as part of the eastern area intermittently.
*** Today’s martyrs
For the first time since 8 Nov 2012, Daraya has not lost any of its children. We pray that the lives of our people are spared from this on-going massacre.
*** Medical Situation
The field hospital received today 5 victims including 3 civilians injured by the incessant shelling and 2 FSA fighters injured in action. Most of the cases were in medium to critical conditions. Amid a dire lack of medical supplies, the victims were rescued and given the necessary treatment and medication.
*** Humanitarian situation
The humanitarian situation is increasingly getting worse for the people of Daraya, whether they are still inside or displaced outside the city, especially in the current freezing conditions.
Around 10,000 people have been under siege inside the city for over 80 days in complete power cut and total blocking of medical, fuel and food supplies.
More than 200,000 displaced people are still suffering the hard living conditions associated with displacement in several areas in Damascus and Damascus Countryside. Most of them suffer under the cold weather, lack of food, blankets and the basic necessities of life. Many of them live in uninhabitable places. The cold weather and lack of medical supplies causes the spread of winter diseases especially among children.
